Gerardus Mercator (born Gerhard Kremer) was a Flemish cartographer, geographer and mathematician whose work had a profound impact on modern cartography. Based in Leuven, he built globes and nautical charts, combining mathematical knowledge and practical skills to meet the needs of navigation and the Age of Discovery. In 1569 he devised the cylindrical projection now known by his name, a mathematical solution that represents meridians and rhumb lines as straight lines—indispensable for sailing navigation. Although it revolutionized route plotting, this projection produces distortions in area representation, a consequence widely discussed ever since. Beyond the projection, Mercator produced globes, regional maps and treatises, leaving an editorial legacy expanded by his son Rumold and by later editions of his atlas. His works and historical examples are preserved in collections and museums, where his contribution to the systematization of cartography in a European context is recognized.
