Gerrie Knetemann was a Dutch road cyclist prominent in the 1970s and 1980s. A professional from 1974, he built his career with leading teams such as Gan–Mercier and TI–Raleigh, where he achieved his greatest successes; in 1978 he won the world championship and also took victory in Paris–Nice that year. His strengths included long stages and team time trials, accumulating ten stage wins in the Tour de France and nine team time trial victories with TI–Raleigh.
Knetemann also won the Amstel Gold Race twice and was named Dutch Sportsman of the Year in 1978, reflecting his importance to national cycling. During his career he faced controversy after testing positive for ephedrine in 1974, and a suspicion in 1977 that produced a negative B-sample; given the ambiguities, the details remain sensitive.
After retiring as a rider he worked as sporting director of the PDM team and as selector of the Dutch national team, helping to develop later generations. He died in 2004 of cardiac arrest, and his name endures in the Gerrie Knetemann Trofee, an award created in his memory to reveal new cycling talent in the Netherlands.
