Gerrit Mannoury was a Dutch philosopher and mathematician, a professor at the University of Amsterdam and a central figure in the movement called signific, the Dutch parallel to the Vienna Circle. Largely self-taught in mathematics, he taught at primary and secondary levels before becoming a privaatdocent and, in 1917, a university professor, lecturing on the philosophy of mathematics, mechanics, and geometry. He received his doctorate late, in 1946; among his influential students was L. E. J. Brouwer.
Politically active, Mannoury was a socialist militant and helped found the scientific service of the Social Democratic party; he later joined more orthodox currents that led to the Dutch Communist Party. His activism included support for causes such as the abolition of the death penalty, although he was expelled from the party in 1932 for Trotskyist sympathies.
A prolific author, he published works on mathematical logic, methodology and the philosophy of mathematics, semantics (significa), and education, as well as writings on religion and social issues. His intellectual references ranged from Hegel and Spinoza to Poincaré and Russell, and his work influenced thinkers such as Evert W. Beth and Adriaan de Groot.
Mannoury’s legacy combines a logical-mathematical approach with philosophical-humanistic and political concerns, leaving a mark on the philosophy of mathematics and the Dutch intellectual tradition of the early twentieth century.
