Gershom Scholem was a historian and philosopher born in Germany who worked in Israel, recognized as a pioneer of the modern academic study of Kabbalah. As the founding professor of the chair in Jewish mysticism at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, he developed a historical and critical approach that treated mystical and mythic dimensions as essential components of Jewish religious life, opposing purely philological or rationalist nineteenth-century readings. Trained in Semitic linguistics, philosophy and mathematical logic, Scholem worked as a librarian and curator of manuscripts, helping organize major Jewish collections and handling discoveries such as fragments of the Dead Sea Scrolls and materials from the Cairo Genizah. His work Major Trends in Jewish Mysticism became a standard reference for systematizing Kabbalistic currents and placing them in historical context. Critical of both Marxism and sentimentalized readings of tradition (as advanced by some contemporaries), Scholem emphasized the importance of messianic movements and the role of heterodox currents — for example in his discussions of Sabbateanism and Hasidism — for understanding Judaism’s internal dynamics. His intellectual legacy reshaped the study of Jewish religions in the twentieth century, leaving a lasting influence on Jewish studies, philosophy of religion and intellectual history.
