Gian Gastone de’ Medici (Giovanni Battista Gastone de’ Medici) was the seventh and last Grand Duke of Tuscany from the Medici dynasty. The son of Cosimo III and Margherita Luisa d’Orléans, he inherited rule in 1723 amid dynastic decline and strong influence from European courts. He married Anna Maria Franziska of Saxe‑Lauenburg and left no heirs, which brought the Medici line to an end.
Although he showed limited political skill and delegated much authority to representatives, Gian Gastone introduced measures that were relatively liberal for the period: he reduced taxes on the poor, encouraged the teaching of scientific and philosophical ideas, fought clerical corruption, abolished public executions, and repealed discriminatory regulations against Jews. These reforms contrasted with the conservative policies of his immediate predecessors.
His private life—marked by an unhappy marriage, gambling, and mental health problems—weakened his public reputation, although his death was mourned by the populace. Gian Gastone’s legacy is ambiguous: institutionally a weak ruler, he nevertheless enacted social and cultural changes that mitigated harsh punishments and promoted greater intellectual openness in Tuscany.
