Gioachino Antonio Rossini was one of the most influential Italian composers of the early 19th century, best known for his 39 operas that reshaped the traditions of both comic and serious opera. His output for the Italian stage, produced between 1810 and 1823, includes works of great popular success such as L'italiana in Algeri, Il barbiere di Siviglia and La Cenerentola, as well as serious operas like Tancredi, Otello and Semiramide, notable for their melodic inventiveness, harmonic color and imaginative orchestral and dramatic solutions.
Engaged by the Paris Opera in 1824, Rossini broadened his career with compositions and revisions for the French repertoire, culminating in Guillaume Tell (1829), his last major opera. Surprisingly, he withdrew from writing operas at the height of his popularity, a decision whose exact cause remains uncertain and has been linked to health issues, personal wealth and aesthetic shifts in the operatic scene.
In his later years he wrote salon pieces and the Petite messe solennelle (1863), and cultivated Parisian salons frequented by figures such as Liszt and Verdi. His legacy endures in his formal innovations and lasting influence on the European operatic tradition.
