Monte George Kiffin was an American football coach recognized as one of the most influential defensive coordinators of the modern era. He is widely credited with creating the philosophy known as the "Tampa 2," an adaptation of the Cover 2 scheme that shaped defenses in college football and the NFL for decades. His idea changed tactical approaches and was widely imitated by top teams. Kiffin served nearly 30 years as an assistant in the NFL, including 13 seasons as defensive coordinator of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, with whom he won Super Bowl XXXVII. Under his leadership, the Buccaneers’ defensive units posted elite numbers in points and yards allowed, establishing a record of consistency among the league’s top defenses. Before his professional career, Kiffin played an important role as defensive coordinator at the University of Nebraska, where he was part of consecutive national championship teams in 1970 and 1971. His career also included a stint as head coach at NC State and various assistant roles with NFL franchises and college programs. Father of coaches Lane and Chris Kiffin, Monte left a lasting legacy in defensive theory and in the development of coaches. He died in July 2024 at age 84 and is remembered for his tactical contribution and impact on generations of teams and football professionals.
