Giovanni Gentile was a philosopher, educator and central political figure in early twentieth-century Italy, known as one of the leading exponents of Italian neo-idealism. As a thinker he developed actual idealism, a radical form of idealism that sought to replace dualisms with a “dialectic of thinking thought,” and he retained significant academic influence in the interwar decades. A cofounder of cultural journals and of the Institute of the Italian Encyclopedia, Gentile built an academic career in Palermo, Pisa and Rome and also served as director and administrator of higher-education institutions. His intellectual output included studies on Hegel, Marx and the idealist tradition, as well as translations and educational interventions. Politically, he was Minister of Public Instruction under the fascist regime and author of the well-known 1923 educational reform, which reorganized the school system on authoritarian, statist principles. Self-declared the “philosopher of fascism,” he helped supply a theoretical foundation for the regime, although he maintained occasional criticisms of its practical application. Remaining aligned with fascism through the Italian Social Republic, his political collaboration and intellectual legacy made him a controversial figure in Italy’s cultural and political history of the period.
