Girolamo Savonarola was an Italian Dominican friar and preacher whose activity in Florence marked the end of the 15th century. He became known for apocalyptic sermons and for advocating a moral reform that opposed the luxury, corruption, and paganism found among Renaissance elites. His severe rhetoric and images of divine judgment attracted broad popular support and the attention of mendicant religious orders.
During the crisis of 1494, Savonarola exercised decisive influence in the removal of the Medici and in the proclamation of a republic with a strong emphasis on public morality; he did not hold official office but guided civic life according to the so‑called “law of Christ.” Under his influence the famous “bonfires of the vanities” took place, resulting in the public destruction of books, artworks, and objects regarded as signs of moral decay.
The confrontation with Pope Alexander VI and opposition from ecclesiastical and artistic circles led to his excommunication in 1497 and, the following year, to his execution. Savonarola’s legacy remains ambiguous: he entered history as a prophetic figure of religious renewal and, at the same time, as a symbol of the tensions among faith, politics, and culture in the Italian Renaissance.
