Glenda May Jackson CBE was a central figure in British theatre and film in the 1960s and 1970s, known for the intensity and commitment she brought to challenging roles. Trained at RADA, she first made her mark on the stage before transferring that prestige to film, where she won two Academy Awards for Best Actress — for Women in Love and A Touch of Class — as well as major prizes such as BAFTAs and Golden Globes. Versatile in range, she played historical and controversial characters, including her acclaimed portrayal of Queen Elizabeth I in the television series Elizabeth R, a role that also brought her recognition on television. Her willingness to take on risky, transformative parts established her reputation as an actress prepared to make significant artistic sacrifices. In the 1990s she moved into politics: elected Labour MP for Hampstead and Highgate, she served in Parliament for several terms and held the post of Minister of State for Transport in Tony Blair’s government. This period in public life extended her legacy beyond the arts, marking her as a public figure of cultural and political significance. She died in 2023, leaving a lasting legacy in both the British dramatic scene and public service.
