Princess Marianne of the Netherlands was born into the House of Orange-Nassau and became a princess of the Kingdom of Prussia by marriage. A daughter of King William I of the Netherlands, she joined the European high nobility of the 19th century, was the sister of the future King William II, and married Prince Albert of Prussia in 1830, with whom she had several children. From midlife she left the marriage and entered into a relationship with Johannes van Rossum, which led to an official divorce in 1849 and to her subsequent estrangement from the courts of The Hague and Berlin. Established at the medieval-reconstructed estate of Reinhartshausen in Germany, she devoted herself to cultural promotion—assembling a considerable art collection and transforming part of the castle into an exhibition space and a residence for young artists. Marianne used part of her fortune on local initiatives, including a donation for the construction of a church in memory of a son who died in 1861. She died at Reinhartshausen in 1883; her legacy survives in the former collection and in the castle’s transformation into a cultural site and, later, into a resort property.
