Grand Duchess of Russia (1882) Olga

Photo: Reproduction

Olga Alexandrovna Romanova was a Grand Duchess of Russia, the youngest daughter of Tsar Alexander III and sister of the last emperor, Nicholas II. Raised in palace settings such as Peterhof and Gatchina, she received the private education typical of the high nobility and enjoyed an affectionate relationship with her father, in contrast to a tense coexistence with Empress Maria. Her first marriage, to Duke Peter of Oldenburg, was never consummated and was annulled in 1916; soon after she married Nikolai Kulikovsky, the man she loved. During World War I she served as a nurse and was decorated for personal bravery. After the 1917 Revolution she fled Russia with her husband and children, living in exile alongside her mother in Denmark and later on a family-owned farm. She supported herself with modest means and faced impostors who claimed Romanov connections. In exile she devoted herself to painting, producing more than two thousand works that provided income and allowed her to support charitable causes. In 1948 she moved to Canada, where she lived until her death in 1960. She is often regarded as the last Grand Duchess of the former Russian dynasty, a figure bridging the empire and the exile.
