Grand Duchess of Russia Xenia

Grand Duchess Xenia Alexandrovna was a member of the Russian imperial family, daughter of Alexander III and sister of the last emperor, Nicholas II. She married her first cousin, Grand Duke Alexander Mikhailovich, with whom she had seven children, and played an active role in the public and private life of the imperial court. She was known for her public devotion to her husband and for an education that combined foreign languages, the arts, and practical skills.

Throughout her life she held prominent roles in philanthropic initiatives: she was a patron of institutions focused on children and naval welfare, supported hospitals for tuberculosis patients, and founded an association to assist children of workers and aviators. Her social work reflected concern for the conditions of the lower classes and for the consequences of the crises that shook Russia in the early twentieth century.

A witness to the tensions that preceded the fall of the monarchy, Xenia recorded in letters and diaries her misgivings about her brother’s government. After the 1917 revolution she fled the country and settled in the United Kingdom, where she lived in exile. Her legacy combines the traditional role of a dynasty member with concrete attention to social initiatives that shaped her public presence.
