James Arthur “Jim” Lovell Jr. was a U.S. naval aviator, test pilot and astronaut whose career rose to prominence in the 1960s and 1970s. After serving in the Korean War he became a test pilot and, in 1962, joined NASA’s second group of astronauts, taking part in four major spaceflights: Gemini VII, Gemini XII, Apollo 8 and Apollo 13. As commander and pilot, Lovell flew on the first mission to orbit the Moon (Apollo 8) and led the Apollo 13 crew, whose 1970 technical failure became one of the most dramatic and widely reported episodes in space exploration. The crew’s handling of the situation, with support from the ground team, ensured the astronauts’ safe return and established the event as an example of in‑flight ingenuity and crisis management. Although he did not land on the lunar surface, Lovell accumulated record flight time during the Gemini and Apollo programs—a legacy tied both to his operational experience and to public discussion of the risks and achievements of human spaceflight. He also coauthored the book Lost Moon, which served as the basis for the film that popularized the Apollo 13 story. He died in 2025, leaving a reputation for leadership, technical skill and a central role in two of the best-known chapters of the crewed Moon missions era.
