Vittoria della Rovere was Princess of Urbino and Grand Duchess of Tuscany by her marriage to Ferdinand II de’ Medici. As heiress to the Della Rovere family’s art collections, she brought to the Medici holdings a body of work that now forms part of the Pitti Palace and the Uffizi Galleries, strengthening Florence’s role as a center of Renaissance and Baroque collecting. The only child of Federico Ubaldo della Rovere and Claudia de’ Medici, she received in childhood the honorary titles of the duchies of Rovere and Montefeltro and a deeply religious education. Her marriage to Ferdinand II cemented dynastic ties between the Della Rovere and Medici houses and had a direct effect on the succession and the grand duchy’s cultural patrimony. The marriage was marked by estrangement and disagreements, but Vittoria retained influence over family affairs by directing the education of her children and later her grandchildren. When she became adviser to her son Cosimo III, she took on a significant role in the day‑to‑day administration of Tuscany. Late in life she partly withdrew to convents and to the Villa del Poggio Imperiale, where she transferred part of her inherited collection. She died in 1694; the Della Rovere titles passed to her son the cardinal, and the artistic patrimony subsequently entered the possession of the Tuscan state, preserving the family’s cultural legacy.
