Friedrich II (F. Wilhelm Ludwig Leopold August) was the last Grand Duke of Baden, a member of the high royal house that ruled the territory until the end of the German monarchy. The son of Frederick I of Baden and a maternal grandson of Emperor Wilhelm I, he was educated for a military career and aristocratic administration, serving in Prussian regiments and rising to posts such as commander of the VIII Army Corps and, in 1905, field marshal. For health reasons he withdrew from active service before the First World War. He married Hilda of Luxembourg in 1885; the marriage, discreet and childless, did not win broad popular support. As heir and later as sovereign, he maintained the liberal orientation of his predecessor’s government, supporting cultural and academic institutions, including the promotion of the local university and the completion of the Kunsthalle Karlsruhe. He acceded to the throne in 1907 and, following the German Revolution of 1918, abdicated on 22 November of that year; the Grand Duchy was replaced by the State of Baden, which later became part of Baden-Württemberg. He retired from public life and spent his final years in poor health, dying in 1928 in Badenweiler.
