Grand Duke Kirill Vladimirovich was a prominent member of the Russian imperial family and a central figure among monarchists in the post-revolutionary period. The son of Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich and grandson of Tsar Alexander II, he pursued a career in the Imperial Navy, serving two decades with the Naval Guards, taking part in the Russo-Japanese War and reaching the rank of rear admiral in 1916. During the First World War and the 1917 Revolution he held important military posts, at one point commanding the Naval Guards’ Depot and briefly leading troops before swearing allegiance to the Provisional Government. After the fall of the monarchy he escaped into exile, living in Germany and, from the late 1920s, in France. With the deaths of closer relatives in the line of succession, Kirill proclaimed himself head of the House of Romanov in 1924 and declared himself Emperor in exile in 1926, a cause to which he devoted his final years. His claim split monarchists and produced dynastic disputes that continue among contemporary claimants. He wrote memoirs published posthumously.
