Gregory Bateson was an English anthropologist and interdisciplinary thinker whose work deeply influenced anthropology, cybernetics, and the social sciences. Trained in zoology and biology, he began ethnographic research in New Guinea and Bali, producing works such as Naven (1936) and Balinese Character (1942), in which he combined cultural observations with epistemological concerns about communication and representation. From the 1940s and 1950s Bateson joined conferences and groups in the United States that helped form cybernetic theory applied to the human sciences, including the Palo Alto Group and the Mental Research Institute. With colleagues he developed the double-bind theory to examine communicational patterns associated with schizophrenia and introduced key concepts such as framing and metacommunication. In subsequent decades he deepened a “meta-science” aimed at integrating systems theories; his ideas are collected in major works such as Steps to an Ecology of Mind (1972) and Mind and Nature (1979). Bateson’s legacy lies in a systemic approach to communication and an epistemological emphasis on how information and difference create meaning in social and ecological contexts.
