Grete Keilson was a German Communist leader whose career spanned decades of activism and service to international Communist organizations. She began in the Communist youth movement and became an assistant to leaders such as Ernst Thälmann and Georgi Dimitrov, carrying out clandestine support tasks including preparing documents and coordinating Communist Party cells outside Germany during the 1930s. While in exile in Paris and the Soviet Union she held positions in the Comintern and worked with antifascist initiatives such as the Congress Against Fascism and War; she also took part in the efforts of the National Committee for a Free Germany during World War II. Returning to Germany in 1945, she joined the personnel leadership of the KPD Central Committee and, after the merger with the SPD, of the SED, later heading the Department of International Relations and serving on the party’s foreign affairs commission. In subsequent decades she worked in the East German Ministry of Foreign Affairs and was awarded several state honors for her political work. Her career represents an influential presence within the party and international structures of twentieth-century German Communism.
