Grigori Perelman is a Russian mathematician known for proving Thurston’s Geometrization Conjecture, whose special case includes the famous Poincaré Conjecture. His work on the Ricci flow and surgical techniques transformed three-dimensional geometric topology, resolving one of the central problems of twentieth-century mathematics. Trained at and affiliated with the Steklov Institute in Saint Petersburg, Perelman distinguished himself early in mathematical competitions and made significant contributions to the study of spaces with curvature bounds, saddle surfaces, and comparison geometry. He published foundational results on manifolds with Ricci curvature bounds, including a proof of the Soul Conjecture. For solving the Poincaré Conjecture he received international recognition, including the Clay Mathematics Institute prize; however, he publicly declined both the Fields Medal and the monetary award associated with the Millennium Prize. His reclusive stance and refusal of honors reinforced his unique profile within the scientific community, leaving a deep and lasting technical legacy in differential geometry and geometric topology.
