Gustavo Díaz Ordaz Bolaños was a lawyer, judge, diplomat and Mexican statesman who served as President of Mexico from 1964 to 1970, affiliated with the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). Before the presidency he pursued a legal and administrative career in Puebla and Oaxaca, served as deputy and senator, and was Secretary of Gobernación (Interior Minister) under Adolfo López Mateos, establishing himself within the PRI’s conservative wing.

As president, Díaz Ordaz maintained stabilization-oriented economic policies and fiscal expansion, continued close cooperation with the United States, and supported the formation of parastatal companies. His administration suppressed labor and student movements, the most notable episode being the repression of the 1968 student protests, which culminated in the tragedy known as the Tlatelolco Massacre.

His authoritarian approach and strong concentration of power shaped his public image, provoking enduring controversy over political responsibility and civil rights. After leaving office he named Luis Echeverría his successor and later held a brief diplomatic post. He is remembered for his influence on 1960s Mexico and for a contentious legacy concerning internal order and repression.
