Gustavo Gorriti is a Peruvian journalist known for his investigations into rebel groups, state corruption, and drug trafficking. He rose to prominence in the 1980s covering Peru’s internal conflict and published a three-volume work on the Shining Path, establishing himself as an authority on the country’s political violence.
Over his career he exposed links between officials and drug traffickers, reporting that brought him into direct conflict with those in power and culminated in his abduction by military personnel during the 1992 constitutional crisis. That episode, for which government figures were later convicted, became a turning point in his career and increased his international profile.
He worked for foreign outlets and in Panama, where he also faced intimidation and defamation suits, before returning to Peru. In 2009 he founded IDL-Reporteros, a nonprofit investigative journalism platform devoted to reporting on corruption and organized crime.
Widely honored with international awards — including distinctions for defending press freedom — his legacy lies in the combination of rigorous reporting and resistance to political pressure, which has influenced generations of reporters in the region.
