Guy Carawan was a folk musician, musicologist, and associate musical director at the Highlander Research and Education Center, an institution important in training leaders of the U.S. civil rights movement. He became known for introducing and spreading the protest song “We Shall Overcome” among organizers of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) in 1960, helping adapt spirituals and folk songs into anthems for the movement.
In addition to performing—he played banjo, guitar, and dulcimer—Carawan worked to document and archive the movement’s songs in order to educate future generations and preserve the musical development of the struggle for civil rights. He collaborated with his wife, Candie Carawan, with whom he recorded and published collections and studies on popular and resistance repertoire.
His work at Highlander, where he served as musical director from 1959 until his retirement in the 1980s, and his publications on protest music left a lasting influence on cultural organizing practices and the sound memory of social activism. The Guy and Candie Carawan collection (1955–2010) is archived in the Southern Folklife Collection at the University of North Carolina.
