Hal Ashby was an American filmmaker and editor associated with the New Hollywood generation, whose work reflected the countercultural attitudes of the 1960s and 1970s. He began as a film editor—work that earned him two Academy Award nominations and a win for In the Heat of the Night—and translated that technical experience into directing marked by rhythms and cuts attentive to actor characterization. He directed a number of influential and varied films, many focused on outsiders and social satire: The Landlord, Harold and Maude, The Last Detail, Shampoo, Bound for Glory, Coming Home and Being There. Several of these titles established iconic performances (such as Jane Fonda and Jon Voight in Coming Home), and two have been preserved by the National Film Registry. His biggest commercial success was Shampoo; artistically, Coming Home earned Ashby his sole Academy Award nomination for director. His later career was eroded by conflicts with studios and rumors about his behavior, which reduced his opportunities to work. Ashby’s legacy lies in the balance between human sensitivity and social critique, his inventive use of editing, and his contribution to a more personal, engaged cinema within the New Hollywood movement.
