Hale S. Irwin is an American professional golfer whose competitive peak came between the mid-1970s and the mid-1980s. He became known for winning three editions of the U.S. Open, and in 1990, at age 45, he became the tournament’s oldest champion; that victory included a long, decisive putt that forced a playoff. On the regular tour he recorded significant wins such as the Sea Pines Heritage Classic (1971) and two editions of the Piccadilly World Match Play (1974, 1975), as well as an impressive streak of cuts made between 1975 and 1978.
Irwin also had success internationally, narrowly missing out on the Open Championship on two occasions (1979 and 1983) and engaging in memorable matches with players like Seve Ballesteros and Tom Watson. His career combined technical consistency and an ability to perform in difficult course conditions, as shown by his titles at Winged Foot and Inverness.
In the senior stage of his career he established himself as a leading figure on the PGA Tour Champions, regarded as one of the division’s most successful winners. Alongside his playing career, he worked as a golf course architect, extending his contribution to the sport through both performance and course design.
