Hans Michael Frank was a German lawyer and political leader, an early member of the movement that became the Nazi Party. He became Adolf Hitler’s personal lawyer and the NSDAP’s jurist, holding positions in the Third Reich apparatus, including serving as a minister without portfolio from 1933. After the invasion of Poland in 1939, Frank was appointed Governor-General of the occupied territory known as the General Government. In that post he headed the Nazi civil administration and implemented repressive policies that included creation of ghettos, use of forced labor, and oversight of sites where mass killings took place. During World War II he held the rank of SS-Obergruppenführer and took part in the legal and administrative coordination that enabled deportations and the systematic extermination of Jews and the persecution of Poles. His administration is associated with conduct that constitutes war crimes and crimes against humanity. Captured in 1945, Frank was tried at the Nuremberg Tribunal, convicted of crimes against humanity and executed in 1946. His role in the Nazi occupation apparatus and in genocidal policies left a lasting mark on the memory of the period and on Holocaust studies.
