Hans Jonas was a German-born philosopher of Jewish origin whose work deeply influenced bioethics and reflection on technology and responsibility. Trained in philosophy and theology, he engaged with existentialism and was influenced by Martin Heidegger and Alfred North Whitehead, while maintaining an intellectual friendship with Hannah Arendt. His life included exile under Nazism, military service in units of German Jews during World War II, and later academic work in Israel, Canada and, above all, the United States.
His output is centered on two major books: The Phenomenon of Life, which seeks a philosophy of biology able to articulate nature and consciousness and helped establish strands of bioethics in the U.S.; and The Imperative of Responsibility (O Princípio Responsabilidade), a key text on technological ethics often cited as a catalyst for the environmental movement in Germany. Jonas also published pioneering studies on Gnosticism, treating it as a philosophical‑existential problem and linking religious traditions to contemporary ethical questions.
Throughout his life Jonas examined the moral implications of scientific and technological progress, arguing for a precautionary ethic in the face of human power over the future. His legacy remains relevant in debates on intergenerational responsibility, bioethics and the philosophy of technology.
