Hans Kollwitz was a German physician and psychotherapist, graduated in 1928, known chiefly for his work as an epidemiologist and for belonging to a culturally prominent family. The eldest son of the artist Käthe Kollwitz, he volunteered for the Imperial Army during the First World War, an experience that marked his generation and professional context. After completing his medical training he devoted himself to clinical practice and health administration, work he continued after the Second World War, having no affiliation with the Nazi Party. His personal life was shaped by losses in wartime: a younger brother killed in the First World War and a son who died on the Eastern Front during the Second World War. Those family experiences, together with the artistic environment of his home, influenced his social and human sensibilities. He lived in Lichtenrade, a locality that suffered heavy air raids during the war, which affected the family residence. In addition to clinical practice, Kollwitz published medical works and organized editions and studies about his mother’s life and oeuvre, contributing to the preservation of the family’s artistic legacy. After 1945 he joined health administration and took part in rebuilding medical services in his country.
