Hans Luther was a lawyer and public administrator who became a central figure of the Weimar Republic through service in government and corporate management. After a municipal career—city councilor in Magdeburg and mayor of Essen (1918–1922)—he moved to ministerial posts: he served as Minister of Food and Agriculture and later as Minister of Finance, contributing to post‑hyperinflation currency stabilization and appointing Hjalmar Schacht as Reich Currency Commissioner.
In January 1925 he became head of government as chancellor of a bourgeois coalition. His term was marked by efforts to strengthen the executive vis‑à‑vis parliament and by political crises culminating in a controversy over the national flag and the DNVP’s withdrawal from the coalition, which produced a vote of no confidence and his resignation in May 1926.
He withdrew from active politics and joined supervisory boards and executive bodies in the railway sector and in industrial and financial firms, where he worked on administrative reforms and on debates over railway wagon classes. His career illustrates the political tensions and the movement between public administration and corporate leadership in interwar Germany.
