Hans Joachim Morgenthau was one of the founders of realist theory in International Relations, whose work shaped debates about power, national interests and foreign policy in the twentieth century. Born in Germany and based in the United States from 1930, he taught at several universities and built his career at the University of Chicago (1943–1971), where he developed a critical analysis of idealism and utopianism in diplomacy.
His most influential book, Politics Among Nations (1948), presents a view of politics between states centered on the pursuit of power and on balance as a mechanism to contain conflicts. Morgenthau also examined the implications of Cold War bipolarity and the risks posed by nuclear technology to human survival, arguing that foreign policy should take these new realities into account.
By arguing that peace depends on counterweights and well-understood national interests, Morgenthau influenced generations of theorists and policymakers in international affairs. His work remains a required reference for those who study political realism and the rational foundations of state conduct.
