Hans Sahl, born Hans Salomon, was a German writer whose career spanned the turbulent twentieth century. Trained in art history, literature, philosophy and archaeology, he became known as a theatre and film critic for Berlin newspapers during the Weimar Republic, before being forced into exile with the rise of Nazism. A Jew with leftist convictions, Sahl experienced successive diasporas: Czechoslovakia, Switzerland, France and, after detention in France, escape to the United States in 1941 with the help of rescue networks. He settled in North America, became a naturalized citizen and maintained an intense literary output, returning to Germany only in the final decades of his life. His work encompasses poetry, criticism, novels and autobiography; notable titles include the novel Die Wenigen und die Vielen and the memoirs Das Exil im Exil, which helped prompt his rediscovery in the 1980s. Posthumous publications and critical editions have consolidated his reputation as a voice of exile and an observer of the cultural and political tensions of his time.
