Max Euwe was a Dutch chess player of international prominence, recognized as the fifth World Chess Champion. Trained as a mathematician, he applied analytical concepts to the study of games and combined a teaching career with competitive play. He became national champion in 1921 and held the title for fourteen years, and he also won the amateur championship in 1928. His most notable victory came in 1935, when he defeated Alexander Alekhine in a lengthy match held across several cities, an event that helped promote the development of chess in the Netherlands. He won the world title, which he lost to Alekhine in 1937; he also took part in the 1948 tournament to reorganize the title. Euwe remained active at a high level for decades, including closely contested games with later players such as Bobby Fischer, and he produced theoretical works on openings and planning in chess. From 1970 to 1980 he served as president of the international federation (FIDE), playing a significant role in organizing key meetings of the period. His legacy combines competitive, pedagogical, and administrative contributions; in Amsterdam there are public commemorations that celebrate his memory.
