Harry Hay (Henry Hay Jr.) was a central figure in the origins of LGBT rights activism in the United States. Trained as a lawyer and teacher, he became known as an organizer when he co‑founded the Mattachine Society, one of the country’s first and most influential gay rights organizations. His work in the 1940s and 1950s helped shape a discourse of collective identity, framing homosexuals as a cultural minority with distinct social claims. Influenced by Marxism and personal experiences, Hay combined political thought and sexual awareness to promote community organization; that communist past, however, also led to internal criticism and his departure from Mattachine’s leadership in 1953. In the years that followed he remained informally and actively involved in the movement, contributing to the founding of the Los Angeles chapter of the Gay Liberation Front in 1969. In the 1970s, alongside his partner John Burnside, he became interested in indigenous spirituality and was a founder of the movement known as the Radical Faeries, which sought cultural and spiritual alternatives to assimilationism. Throughout his life, Hay held views at odds with the gay movement’s mainstream, which marked his legacy as a heterodox theorist and activist.
