Hector Berlioz was a French Romantic composer, with among his best-known works the Symphonie fantastique, Harold in Italy, the Requiem, Les Troyens and The Damnation of Faust, having contributed significantly to modern orchestration with his Treatise on Instrumentation.
He employed massive orchestral forces for some of his works, giving several concerts with more than a thousand musicians.
He also composed about fifty songs with piano and orchestral accompaniment. His influence was fundamental to the development of Romanticism, especially on composers such as Richard Wagner, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Franz Liszt, Richard Strauss and Gustav Mahler
