Heinrich Gerhard Kuhn was a physicist whose career unfolded between Germany and Great Britain, specializing in atomic spectroscopy and hyperfine structure. Trained in Göttingen, he worked under James Franck and completed a thesis on halogen spectra that confirmed the Franck–Condon principle. His early studies also covered the Stark effect and investigations of light elements such as lithium, sodium and potassium. With the rise of the Nazi regime, Kuhn, classified as non-Aryan, left Germany in 1933 and settled in the United Kingdom, where he collaborated at the Clarendon Laboratory in Oxford. During World War II he joined the team on the Tube Alloys project investigating isotope separation and later collaborated with the Manhattan Project in the United States. After the war he remained at Oxford as a teacher and researcher, becoming the first physicist fellow of Balliol College in 1950 and a member of the Royal Society in 1954. He published authoritative works on atomic spectra—first in German (1934) and later in English (1962)—that influenced generations of researchers. His legacy is linked to the establishment of atomic spectroscopy and to the integration of refugee scientists into British institutions.
