Heinrich Rudolf Hertz was a German physicist whose work provided experimental confirmation of the electromagnetic waves predicted by James Clerk Maxwell. In 1888 Hertz built transmitters and receivers capable of emitting and detecting those waves, demonstrating properties such as reflection, refraction and polarization, and establishing the experimental foundation for the development of telecommunications. In recognition of his work, the SI unit of frequency was named the hertz (Hz). Trained and influenced by figures such as Gustav Kirchhoff and Hermann von Helmholtz, Hertz held academic posts in Kiel, Karlsruhe and Bonn, where he directed the Physics Institute until his death. His output includes studies of rapid electrical oscillations, the relationship between light and electricity and work on theoretical mechanics, some of which was published posthumously. Born into a Hanseatic family in Hamburg, Hertz combined teaching and research during a period of rapid consolidation of electromagnetic theory in the late 19th century. His technical and conceptual legacy paved the way for radio, wave physics and numerous modern applications, securing him a prominent place in the history of science.
