Heinrich John Rickert was a German Neo-Kantian philosopher and a central figure of the so-called Baden School, known for systematizing the conceptual foundations of the cultural sciences. In his academic career he taught at Freiburg and Heidelberg, supervising and influencing thinkers of the next generation, among them Martin Heidegger, Emil Lask and Walter Benjamin.
His work sought to draw a strict distinction between the physical sciences and the historical sciences, arguing that historical knowledge depends on value judgments about past experiences and is not amenable to direct empirical verification. This concern appears in major books, including Culture and Natural Science (1899), The Philosophy of Life (1920) and The Logic of Predicates and the Problem of Ontology (1930).
On the intellectual level, Rickert maintained dialogues with figures such as Wilhelm Windelband, who was his advisor, and also exchanged ideas with Georg Simmel, Max Weber, Edmund Husserl and Karl Jaspers. Although parts of his output have been little translated, his work has been rediscovered by studies highlighting his contribution to the philosophy of history and the methodology of the human sciences.
