Henri Barbusse was a French writer and political activist, author of novels, short stories, poetry and extensive journalistic work. He rose to international prominence with Le Feu (1916), a starkly realistic account of the First World War that earned him the Prix Goncourt and influenced writers of the so‑called Lost Generation. His work blends wartime memoir with moral and political reflection, making him a central figure in French literature between 1910 and 1939. Initially a pacifist, Barbusse served on the front in 1914–1915; the experience altered his outlook and drew him toward revolutionary communism. In the following decades he became a member of the French Communist Party, took part in congresses and led international initiatives against war and fascism, in addition to editing magazines such as Monde and Progrès Civique. Politically engaged, Barbusse underwent an evolution that led him to praise the Russian Revolution and to openly support Soviet construction, even publishing a favorable biography of Stalin in 1935. His activity left an ambivalent legacy: literary recognition for his denunciation of militarism and a controversial political influence for his advocacy of Soviet communism in the 1920s and 1930s.
