Henri Jules Constant Guillaumet was a French civil aviator and a central figure in the Latécoère and Aéropostale lines and later in Air France. Recognized among the pioneers of French aviation, he played a leading role in opening and establishing commercial air routes between Europe, Africa and South America, helping to expand international airmail in the 1920s and 1930s.
A specialist in particularly difficult flights, Guillaumet made hundreds of crossings of the Andes—becoming known as the “Angel of the Andes”—and took part in search-and-rescue missions that brought him public distinction. His technical skill, combined with courage in extreme conditions, helped make regular services over inhospitable terrain viable and professionalized long-distance air transport.
A defining episode of his career was the forced landing in the Andes in 1930 and the subsequent trek on foot in search of help, stories that reinforced his reputation for endurance and devotion to duty. His legacy endures in the history of French commercial aviation, both for his operational role and for the personal example he set in establishing intercontinental routes.
