Henri Louis Le Châtelier was a French chemist and metallurgist whose work bridged theoretical chemistry and its industrial applications at the end of the 19th and the start of the 20th century. Trained at the École Polytechnique and the École des Mines, he taught at prominent institutions — including the École des Mines, the Collège de France, and the Sorbonne — and from 1907 served as inspector-general of mines.
He is best known for the principle that bears his name, formulated in 1888, which describes how systems at chemical equilibrium respond to changes in concentration, pressure, and temperature. His research broadened understanding of chemical thermodynamics and influenced experimental and industrial practices for controlling reaction processes.
Le Châtelier also studied the thermal properties of gases at high temperatures and developed methods for thermal measurement, such as the optical pyrometer, while promoting chemical applications in key French industries — including ammonia production, cement, steel, and ceramics. He published on the relationship between science and industry and left a lasting legacy in applied chemistry and metallurgy.
