Henri Michaux was a Belgian-born writer, poet and painter who wrote in French. His work is notable for its exploration of the self, dreams and human suffering. After a Jesuit school education and brief medical studies, he abandoned family expectations and traveled through the Americas—experiences that fed his early texts and travel notebooks. He settled in Paris, where he published in avant-garde magazines and established a large body of work that includes essays, short stories, aphorisms and travel accounts. As a visual artist, Michaux drew on figures such as Paul Klee and Max Ernst and exhibited from 1937 onward, integrating drawings and paintings often related to his writing. In the 1950s he began experiments with hallucinogenic drugs, recorded in key works that probe perception (including accounts of mescaline), while continuing an intense poetic and aphoristic output. Recognized internationally, he influenced and was admired by writers such as André Gide and Octavio Paz; he received awards and attracted interest across artistic fields, leaving a diverse legacy in both literature and the visual arts, with posthumous publications that expanded his catalogue.
