Henri Poincaré was one of the foremost French mathematicians and scientists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, noted for his interdisciplinary work across pure mathematics, theoretical physics and the philosophy of science. A professor at the Sorbonne for decades, he made foundational contributions to analysis, differential equations, topology (his 1895 Analysis situs systematized essential notions) and celestial mechanics, where his three-volume Les méthodes nouvelles de la mécanique céleste left a mark on the theory of the three-body problem.

In applied areas, Poincaré investigated problems in optics, electricity, capillarity, elasticity, thermodynamics and early questions in the theory of relativity, collaborating with Hendrik Lorentz on important developments. He was also a pioneer in recognizing the possibility of chaotic behavior in deterministic systems, an observation that would only be fully appreciated decades later.

Author of influential popular works—such as Science and Hypothesis, The Value of Science and Science and Method—he combined technical and philosophical reflection on mathematical and scientific foundations. His topological conjecture left a lasting legacy in geometry and spurred research that culminated in its resolution in the 21st century. He is often cited as the last great universalist for the breadth and depth of his work.
