Henry Eyring was a theoretical chemist, born in Mexico and later a U.S. citizen, known for fundamental advances in chemical kinetics. His principal contribution was the development of absolute rate theory, also called transition state theory, which reshaped understanding of reaction rates and mechanisms in the twentieth century. That theory influenced later work that led to Nobel Prizes, and his omission from the list of laureates prompted surprise and debate within the scientific community. A prolific author, Eyring published more than 600 papers and several academic and popular works, covering topics from catalysis and surface chemistry to biological applications of rate theory. He received major honors, including the National Medal of Science (1966), the Berzelius Medal (1977) and the Wolf Prize in Chemistry (1980). He also served in institutional leadership roles, including presidencies of the American Chemical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. His legacy endures in modern theoretical and catalytic chemistry and in the training of generations of chemists who extended and applied his ideas across multiple fields of science.
