Herbert Marcuse was a German philosopher and sociologist who settled in the United States and became a significant figure of the Frankfurt School. Author of influential works such as Eros and Civilization (1955) and One-Dimensional Man (1964), he was noted for his critiques of capitalism, modern technology, and mass culture, seeing them as contemporary mechanisms of social control. Trained within the German philosophical milieu and deeply influenced by his engagement with Marx and Freud, Marcuse developed a critical theory that examined alienation and the erosion of the emancipatory potential of the working classes. He argued that technological development and consumerism might be reorganized to promote human fulfillment, while acknowledging the system’s power to neutralize revolutionary impulses. Exiled after the rise of Nazism, he joined the Institute for Social Research abroad and worked on government projects in the United States before becoming an intellectual reference for the New Left in the 1960s and 1970s. His thought influenced student movements and numerous activists and critical thinkers internationally.
