Herbert Bowles Mills was a member of the vocal quartet The Mills Brothers, one of the most influential African American groups of the twentieth century in vocal jazz and traditional pop. As a tenor, he helped create the four‑voice sound that, together with guitar accompaniment and vocal imitations of instruments, produced a vast and commercially successful repertoire — more than 2,000 recordings and dozens of gold records. The group reached several historic milestones: it was the first Black act to have its own nationally networked radio show (CBS, 1930), scored a number‑one hit with “Paper Doll” (1943), and crossed borders by appearing in films and on international stages. The vocal technique of simulating instruments, to which Herbert contributed, made them both recognizable and innovative for their time. The Mills Brothers’ career consolidated at a crucial moment of transition from radio to the record industry, helping pave the way for Black artists in mass media. Herbert’s legacy is part of the group’s long influence on later voices and vocal ensembles, and the Mills Brothers were subsequently honored by institutions devoted to the history of vocal music.
