Herbert Selpin was a German filmmaker and screenwriter active in the 1930s and 1940s, known for entertainment films and for works commissioned by the regime’s propaganda apparatus. He began his technical and artistic career in major studios such as UFA and worked as an assistant on several of the period’s innovative productions, before taking up feature directing in 1931. Throughout the 1930s he worked on films that ranged between entertainment and National Socialist propaganda; some of his titles were poorly received, but he made an impact with Carl Peters (1941), an explicitly anti-British work. From this repertoire he received further official commissions and was chosen by Joseph Goebbels to direct a version of Titanic conceived as a critique of British and American capitalist interests. During the filming of Titanic, clashes on set and complaints arising from his critical remarks about the military led to his arrest in July 1942. He was found dead in his cell the next day, a circumstance that prompted controversy and rumors about the cause of death. The production continued without crediting Selpin, and the film was largely suppressed by official propaganda authorities.
