Hereditary Prince of the Duchy of Anhalt, Leopold Friedrich Franz Ernst was a member of the House of Ascania and a figure of the 19th-century German aristocracy. Born in Dessau as the eldest son of the hereditary prince Frederick, he became heir to the duchy in 1871 after his father acceded to the ducal throne. His position placed him within the dynastic circle of the newly unified German states. In 1884 he married Princess Elisabeth of Hesse-Kassel; the union produced a single daughter, Antoinette. Before that marriage, Leopold had proposed — and been refused by — Princess Victoria of Prussia, an episode that reflects the carefully negotiated marital alliances among the royal houses of the time. His public career included decorations from various ducal and princely orders, markers of his social standing and the ties between German courts. He died unexpectedly in Cannes in 1886, without male heirs, whereupon succession passed to his brother Frederick, the future Duke Frederick II of Anhalt. Leopold’s brief role as heir and his premature death affected the duchy’s line of succession and the dynastic continuity of the House of Ascania.
