Hubert de Givenchy, or Hubert-James Marcel-Taffin Givenchy, was a French aristocrat and fashion designer.
The son of Marquis Lucien Taffin de Givenchy and Béatrice de Givenchy, his grandfather ran a carpet workshop in Beauvais. Very early he showed an interest in fashion. At ten, while visiting an exhibition of costumes by the most famous French designers, he immediately identified with the luxurious world of haute couture. At 17 Givenchy went to Paris, carrying a portfolio full of sketches. He worked at the fashion houses of Jacques Fath, Robert Piguet, Lucien Lelong and Elsa Schiaparelli. He opened his own fashion house in 1952, and recognition was almost immediate.
Givenchy bade farewell to the runway in 1995, with a show attended only by personal friends, designers and major clients. The Givenchy brand continues to exist. A year later, in October 1996, the British designer Alexander McQueen was chosen as his successor. Since June 2020 Givenchy has been led by American designer Matthew Williams.
