Hunter S. Thompson was an American journalist and writer who became a central figure in the movement known as New Journalism. He gained notoriety after spending a year with the Hells Angels motorcycle club and publishing Hell's Angels (1967), a first-person account that solidified his immersive reporting method. From that point he developed the "Gonzo" style, in which the author becomes both participant and subject of the narrative, influencing generations of reporters and columnists.
His best-known work is Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1972), originally published in Rolling Stone, a book that blends reportage, fiction and social criticism to diagnose the dissonance and exhaustion of the 1960s counterculture. He also covered political campaigns, collecting his dispatches in Fear and Loathing: On the Campaign Trail '72 (1973), and maintained an editorial presence in outlets such as Rolling Stone, Playboy, Esquire and the San Francisco Examiner.
Thompson cultivated a strong countercultural image—extended use of alcohol and drugs, a fondness for firearms and an iconoclastic stance toward authority. His career declined from the mid-1970s onward, in part due to personal and health problems. He is remembered for his irreverent style, caustic criticism of the establishment and his influential legacy in contemporary literary journalism.
