Ian Andrew Robert Stewart, known as Stu, was a Scottish pianist whose decisive role took place behind the scenes and in the studios of British rock. A founding member of the Rolling Stones’ original lineup, he was removed from the band’s public-facing position by management decisions but remained a permanent studio pianist and road manager, often cited as “the sixth Stone.”
His musical signature appears on essential Stones recordings from the 1960s through the 1980s, especially on blues and country-rock tracks such as "Let It Bleed," "Dead Flowers," and "Sweet Virginia," as well as on Chuck Berry covers. Stewart also collaborated with other artists — notably his contribution to Led Zeppelin’s "Boogie with Stu" — and championed a boogie-woogie aesthetic that influenced arrangements and sessions of the era.
As the group’s career progressed, he increasingly focused on administrative duties as the personal issues of senior members required management; even so, he rejoined touring lineups at key moments between 1969 and 1982. His importance was recognized posthumously: the Rolling Stones requested that his name be included when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and recordings featuring his piano continue to circulate as part of the band’s legacy.
